「イエス･キリストが十字架で処刑された」ということは、歴史の教科書にも載っている有名な事実ですから、多くの方がご存知のことでしょう。その場面で2人の犯罪人が、1人はキリストの右にもう1人は左に同じ様に十字架にかけられていました。彼らは罪なき神の御子キリストとは違って、自分たちが犯した罪の故に処刑されていたわけですが、その内の1人は十字架にかけられていながらも何の反省もしていなかったようです。そればかりか彼は、キリストに対して「あなたは救い主キリストではないか。自分と私たちを救え。」などと悪態をついていました。ところがもう一方の犯罪人は違いました。彼について聖書には、このように記されています。 ところが、もうひとりのほうが答えて、彼をたしなめて言った。「おまえは神をも恐れないのか。おまえも同じ刑罰を受けているではないか。われわれは、自分のしたことの報いを受けているのだからあたりまえだ。だがこの方は、悪いことは何もしなかったのだ。」そして言った。「イエスさま。あなたの御国の位にお着きになるときには、私を思い出してください。」（ルカの福音書23章40節～42節） 彼は十字架の上で自分の死を目の前にして、人生を振り返り、自らが犯してきた罪を深く反省していたようです。そして彼はイエス･キリストに対して、少し遠回しな表現で救いを求めたのです。そんな彼に対して、キリストは何と言われたでしょうか。「あなたは今まで散々悪いことをしてきたではないか。死ぬ間際になって、何を今更調子のいいことを言っているのか。自分の罪の報いをしっかりと受けなさい。」などと言われたでしょうか。或いは、「あなたはまだ洗礼を受けていないではないか。そればかりか、あなたは今まで私の教えを聞いたことすらない。もうあなたには時間がない。手遅れだ。あきらめなさい。」などと言われたでしょうか。そんなことは言われませんでした。イエス･キリストは、死の間際に救いを求めたこの犯罪人に対して、このように答えられました。 「まことに、あなたに告げます。あなたはきょう、わたしとともにパラダイスにいます。」（ルカの福音書23章43節） 実にキリストは、死の間際に救いを求めたこの犯罪人に救いを宣言されたのです。 今日是非とも知っていただきたいことがあります。それは「イエス･キリストという方は、このように恵みと憐れみに満ちた方であり、どのような人に対しても快く救いを宣言してくださる方である」ということです。イエス･キリストは、聖書のセの字も知らない人であっても、死刑に値するような犯罪人であっても、もしもその人が救いを求めるならば、たとえそれが死の間際であったとしても、何のためらいもなく何の条件もつけずに快く救いを宣言してくださるのです。 もちろんあなたは、あの十字架の犯罪人のように死刑に値するような罪を犯したことはなかったことでしょう。しかし聖書は、「神の前に罪のない人など1人もおらず、全ての人が救いを必要としている罪人である」と語っています。もしもあなたが今、神から離れ神に背を向け、あたかも自分を神とするような自己中心な生き方をしているならば、実はあなたも神の前には立派な罪人であるのです。そして聖書の中に「人間には、一度、死ぬことと、死後にさばきを受けることが定まっている」（ヘブル人への手紙9章27節）と記されているように、人間はみな、自らの罪の故に必ず死なくてはならないばかりか、死んだ後に神の御前に立ってさばきを受け、滅びなくてはならない存在なのです。 しかしそんな私たちを神は見捨てることなく、なおも憐れんで1人の救い主を与えてくださいました。それが神の御子イエス･キリストです。キリストは罪のために滅びに向かっていた私たちを救うため、天の栄光を捨てて人となってこの世に来られました。そればかりかキリストは、私たち人間の全ての罪をその身に負って十字架にかかられ、本来私たちが受けるべき全ての罪の刑罰を、私たちの身代わりに受けて死んでくださったのです。さらにキリストは死んで終わりではなく、三日目によみがえられ、この十字架の死と復活によって全人類に対する救いの道を開いてくださったのです。 イエス･キリストは今も生きておられます。そしてご自分を信じる全ての人々に罪の赦しと永遠の命を与えてくださっているのです。これが「福音」と呼ばれる聖書の中心メッセージです。誰であれ自分が罪人であることを認め、神が与えてくださった救い主イエス･キリストを信じ受け入れる者は救われるのです。 聖書の中の聖書と呼ばれるヨハネの福音書3章16節に、このようにあります。 神は、実に、そのひとり子（イエス･キリスト）をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。それは御子（イエス･キリスト）を信じる者が、ひとりとして滅びることなく、永遠のいのちを持つためである。 神はあなたのことを愛しておられます。そして、あなたが滅びるのではなく、永遠の命を持って平安と希望と祝福に満ちた人生を歩むことを望んでおられるのです。

I believe that many people are familiar with the fact that Jesus Christ died on the cross as it is a famous event which is mentioned in history books. Two other men, both criminals, were also crucified—one on His right, the other on His left. They were executed because of the sins they had committed unlike the Christ the Son of God who did not commit any sin; but one of them did not reflect upon himself and his actions at all while being crucified. And not only that, he also insulted Christ saying, “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” However, the other criminal was different. This is written in the Bible about him: “But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this Man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into Your Kingdom.” (Luke 23:40~42 NIV) It seemed that he had looked back on his life up to that point and deeply reflected on the sins he had committed as he faced his death on the cross. Also, he asked Jesus Christ for salvation though it was said in a little indirect way. What did Christ Jesus tell him? Did he say, “You have done many wrong things up until now. How could you say flattering things at this point of time before your death? You really have to accept the retribution for your sins.”? Or did he say, “You have not been baptized yet. Moreover, you have never heard My teachings. You do not have time. It is too late. You must give up.”? He never mentioned any of that. Jesus Christ replied to the criminal who asked Him for salvation before his death, “Truly, I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43 NIV). Jesus Christ declared “Salvation” to this criminal who asked it of Him. Today, I really want you to know that “Jesus Christ is full of grace and mercy, and He is willing to declare salvation toward any person.” Jesus Christ is willing to declare salvation without any hesitation or conditions to anyone even if they do not know anything about the Bible. Needless to say, you have not committed a sin deserving capital punishment as those criminals who died on the cross. Despite that, the Bible tells us that “No one is without sin before God, and all of us are sinners who need salvation.” If you are apart from God, turn your back on Him, and live your life selfishly as if you were a god—you are, in fact, a great sinner before God. As it is written in the Bible, “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27 NIV), every human not only has to die because of their sins but also needs to face judgment before God after they die, and are all condemned to be destroyed. However, God did not forsake us, and furthermore, by His mercy, He gave us a Savior. It is Him who is the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Christ Jesus set aside the glory of heaven and came to this world as a human in order to save us who are heading for destruction because of our sins. Moreover, Christ Jesus Himself bore all our sins on His body on the cross, and He suffered for our sins and died on the cross on our behalf even though we were the ones who had to receive the punishment for all our sins. Also, the death of Jesus Christ was not the end because after three days He rose from the dead, and He opened the door of salvation to all the human race because of His death on the cross and resurrection. Jesus Christ lives even today. He will forgive our sins, give us eternal life, and bring a new life to all people who believe in Him. This is the main part of the message in the Bible, which is called the “Gospel” (Good News). No matter who you are, if you acknowledge that you are a sinner and accept Jesus Christ as your Savior you will be saved. It is written in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
